{"id":946,"date":"2019-10-03T19:03:38","date_gmt":"2019-10-03T18:03:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hanes-meirionnydd.cymru\/en\/?p=946"},"modified":"2019-10-03T19:03:41","modified_gmt":"2019-10-03T18:03:41","slug":"merioneth-wool-and-the-atlantic-slave-trade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hanes-meirionnydd.cymru\/en\/2019\/10\/03\/merioneth-wool-and-the-atlantic-slave-trade\/","title":{"rendered":"Merioneth Wool and the Atlantic Slave Trade"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>7 September 2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"724\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hanes-meirionnydd.cymru\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/10\/Poster-Welsh-Wool-and-the-Atlantic-Slave-Trade-724x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-947\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On a fine day at\nthe beginning of September, an excellent audience gathered at Beudy Llwyd at yr\nYsgwrn, Trawsfynydd to hear Dr Marian Gwyn lecturing, in English,\nauthoritatively and interestingly on Welsh Wool and the Atlantic Slave Trade.\nThis is an extremely difficult subject in general, but she suggested that it is\neven more difficult for Welsh people to imagine our part in slavery as we tend\nto see ourselves as a country which has been prominent, especially through the\ntrade unions, in protecting the exploited. However, the reality was that this\ntrade touched very many countries and Wales, with its part in this triangular\ntrade, was no exception. It could be argued that the woollen industry was the\nbiggest industry in Wales for centuries but it is unlikely that the ordinary\nweaver, tanner and dyer were aware or dwelt much on the fact that much of their\nproduce went to clothe slaves and that Welsh woollens were known as \u2018Welsh\nplains\u2019 that was synonomous with \u2018negro cloth\u2019. The plain and horrifying facts\nregarding the trade at its height were indeed frightening and we can only be\nthankful that we live in a more enlightened and civilized period. As an\nauthority on this subject, we hope that Marian publishes this lecture very\nsoon.
